A tripping breaker needs an explanation

A breaker may trip because of the connected load, a wiring fault, equipment trouble or a problem with the breaker itself. We assess the cause before recommending a repair. Installing a larger breaker is not a substitute for checking whether the circuit and conductors are suitable.

Brock’s Electric handles breaker and circuit inquiries for homes and businesses in Pasco and Pinellas County.

Repairing a fault or adding a circuit

Replacing a defective breaker and installing a dedicated circuit are different jobs. A replacement must be compatible with the panel and circuit. A new circuit needs an appropriate route, capacity and protection for the equipment it will supply.

  • Repeated trips or a circuit that will not stay on.
  • A planned appliance, charger or piece of equipment with specific supply requirements.
  • Changes to an existing circuit or the way a room is used.
  • Questions about available space in the electrical panel.

Equipment requirements shape the work

Have the equipment model or electrical requirements available when possible. We also need to understand the installation location, distance from the panel and access to the wiring route. If capacity is a concern, panel work or an incoming service upgrade may need separate consideration.

Questions about breaker work

Can the breaker simply be replaced?

That depends on the cause. Replacing a breaker will not resolve a fault in an appliance, damaged wiring or an unsuitable circuit load.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for new equipment?

The equipment requirements and existing electrical system determine that. Tell us what you want to install so the circuit scope can be assessed.

Tell us what happens

Describe which circuit trips, what was running and whether the problem started after a change. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker to keep a faulting circuit in use, remove panel covers or perform electrical tests.

Request breaker or circuit service or call (727) 243-7050. For a problem whose source is unclear, see our electrical troubleshooting service.

Before you contact us

Have your location, the affected equipment and the pattern of the fault ready. For a new circuit, include the equipment model and intended location.

A recurring trip is a reason for assessment. Do not increase breaker size or open the panel to investigate yourself.

Discuss your project
