Plan the loads you want to support

Backup power is an equipment and electrical-system project, not just a generator purchase. Start with the appliances, circuits or equipment you want to operate during an outage. Those priorities help determine sizing and connection requirements.

Brock’s Electric discusses generator electrical work for properties in Pasco and Pinellas County.

Standby installation and generator hookups

A permanently installed standby system and a portable-generator connection have different requirements. Both need suitable transfer arrangements that keep generator power from feeding back into the utility supply. We assess the proposed equipment and existing electrical system before defining the connection work.

  • Priority loads and the equipment’s starting requirements.
  • Generator type, model and intended operation.
  • Transfer equipment and panel compatibility.
  • Installation location, access and wiring route.
  • Fuel, permits and any work requiring separate coordination.

Never connect a generator through a household outlet or improvised backfeed cable. Portable generators must stay outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions and the CPSC’s generator safety guidance.

Confirm who handles each part

Generator supply, fuel connections, site preparation, electrical work and future maintenance should have clear responsibilities. The scope needs to identify any separate trades and approval requirements. Tell us whether you already have equipment or need to coordinate its supply and future maintenance.

Questions about backup power

Will a generator power the whole property?

That depends on the generator capacity, selected loads and electrical design. Tell us which equipment matters so those requirements can be reviewed.

Can you connect a generator I already own?

Provide its model and the connection you are considering. Suitability, transfer equipment and the property’s electrical system need assessment before the work is agreed.

Related planning may involve panel work or service equipment. No installation is a promise of uninterrupted power or medical continuity.

Before you contact us

Tell us the generator type or proposed model, the equipment you want to support, your location and any existing transfer equipment.

Do not test a connection with improvised cables. Generator selection, placement and electrical connection need a coordinated scope.
